Aalis ka na ba?

This poem was written by a comrade. She’s now in the mountains.

Aalis Ka Na Ba
Ni Leslie Santos

Pagod ka na ba
Sa pakikisalamuha
Sa mga masa’t kasama
Babalik ka na ba
Sa malambot mong kama at sa mesa mong nagpipiyesta

Siguradong mamimis kita
Pero ikaw ang magpapasya
Kaya sa iyong paglisan
Ay baunin mo
Ang mga prinsipyo
Alala’t pag asa
Ng nag aalab na sona

At sana…
Sa iyong pamamasyal
Sa SM at sa Divisoria isang araw
Ay bibili ka
Ng bagong pares ng salamin o di kaya’y “contact lens”
Upang makita mong muli
Ang mayayabong na mga punong
Pagsasabitan ng duyan mo.

Also, here’s wikipedia’s list of famous Filipino-Americans.

celebrities with filipino blood

after posting a comment at francis’s blog, i was googling around trying to verify if indeed grant hill’s mom was a filipina or not. in case you’re wondering, no, grant hill’s mom is not filipino. his mother-in-law (tamia’s mom) is half-filipino as what tamia wrote on one of her fansite’s guestbook (it’s there somewhere, just search for it).

i also found something equally interesting - wikipedia’s list of multiracial celebrities. listed below are those who have filipino blood (some, surprisingly, i only knew after reading the page).

  • cory aquino, philippine president
  • tia carrere, actress
  • phoebe cates, actress
  • natalie coughlin, olympic swimmer
  • francine dee, model
  • emm gryner, canadian pop singer
  • nia peeples, actress
  • lou diamond philips, actor
  • jo ralston, model
  • jose rizal, philippine national hero
  • rob schneider, actor/comedian
  • tamlyn tomita, actress
  • lalaine vergara-paras, actress
hmmm… i think they missed alley baggett who is half-spanish, half filipino

ping lacson joke

this is from neal cruz’s as i see it column in the inquirer:

A friend sees Sen. Ping Lacson banging his head against the wall.

"Bakit? [Why] What is he doing?" the friend asks Lacson’s aide who is standing by.

"He has been like that since FPJ died," replies the aide. "If he had accepted the offer to be FPJ’s running mate, he would be president now."

legally though, lacson would still have to win the vice-presidential race in such a scenario.

building philippine culture from the ground up

a "new fashion for thinking" about philippine culture by rome jorge (published online in the philweavers network.)

an excerpt:

"We are a young country. We are still under construction. And that makes this a very exciting time for artists, designers, writers and anyone with a stake in our culture. And that means all of us. We get to help build Pinoy culture from the ground up. We don’t just rediscover traditions; we start them. We get to write our name on the concrete while it’s still wet. Now is the time to be trailblazers, innovators and firsts. It is a golden opportunity and an inescapable responsibility. What we do as artists, writers and audiences either corrodes or galvanizes our culture."
